Marvel fans rejoiced after learning that a Captain Marvel sequel is on its way courtesy of the good folks over at Marvel Studios. For now, we still know very little about the project other than the speculation that it could feature at least two more Captain Marvels not named Carol Danvers.
For the longest time, fans have had a theory surrounding Carol Danvers' true sexual orientation. In the comics, there's no doubt that Carol is a straight woman and in fact, she's had romantic ties with James Rhodes aka War Machine although, for the most part, the character comes across as someone who's "boyish", for lack of a better term.
Even in the movie version starring Brie Larson, Danvers seems to display qualities of a queer person which led a lot of fans to believe that she could also be an LGBTQ character. Now, a new rumor suggests that Larson's character could indeed be revealed as a gay woman in Captain Marvel 2.
According to tipster Daniel Richtman's Patreon report, aside from the possibility of Captain Marvel 2 bringing in Monica Rambeau as Photon and Kamala Khan's Ms. Marvel, the film will also explore Danvers' romantic relationship with a shocking character — none other than Monica's mother Maria Rambeau.
Nothing has been officially confirmed yet so take this report with a huge grain of salt. In the first Captain Marvel film, Carol and Maria are portrayed as the best of friends but some fans have insinuated that there could be more going on between them.
This new rumor could explain why Danvers seemed to have a personal beef with Thanos in Avengers: Endgame even though they've never had an encounter before. And how about Monica seemingly distancing herself from her Auntie Carol? Maybe she knew something about their "relationship" that resulted in their bond being tainted. At this point, no one knows for sure.
Captain Marvel 2 is slated for release in 2022.
