After over a week of us hearing all the best about Blue Period and having no means of watching, Episode 1 finally hit Netflix, and it's everything we need during the Fall 2021 anime season. The concept of a character set to work on an impossible dream no matter the cost is by no means new, but it's nevertheless one that almost always works.
Based on a popular manga by Yamaguchi Tsubasa, Blue Period follows Yatora Yaguchi an honors student who discovers his love for painting and fights for it in a technocratic world.

Blue Period Episode 1: First Impressions
The pacing of Blue Period might perplex you at first with its non-existent introduction to the main character Yatora Yaguchi. In hindsight, this is probably for the best. We find out all about him, not through an exceptional event but through a day like any other, which just happens to change his life.
Yaguchi is an honors student who does well at school but doesn't get particular satisfaction from his successes. When not studying, he purposelessly hangs out with his friends, picking up bad habits like smoking, out of sheer boredom. When his art teacher asks the class to draw their favorite scenery, Yaguchi doesn't think much about it.
Seeing an older classmates' painting, however, Yaguchi becomes interested in her unique use of color. Her work inspires him to create his own, very blue composition of a place he sees on his way to and from school.
Yaguchi isn't ready to leave his safe path as an honors student and pursue his interest in painting, however. Deeply in denial, he offends his artistic classmate Ayukawa Ryuuji over her choice to try attending art school when she graduates.
Over the course of the episode, Yaguchi realizes that the hurtful things he told his classmate, was what he was vainly trying to persuade himself about. His harsh words might make him an unlikeable protagonist, but the true colors (pun intended) of his internal struggle are unmistakable: Yaguchi wants to go to art school more than anything, but he's always been taught to play it safe.
The episode ends in a positive tone, but the stakes are extremely high; Yaguchi, who can't afford a private college, decides to try to be accepted into the one public art school in Japan, even though their acceptance rate is below 1%. Impossible as this challenge seems, all of us who have found ourselves in similar situations can't help rooting for him!
