Sony is banking in on Tom Holland's fame by casting him as the lead in the Uncharted film franchise, but the film has recently caught a snag with director Shawn Levy leaving the project. Interestingly enough, Sony has already found someone to replace Levy in the director's chair.
According to Variety, Dan Trachtenberg is now the new director for the Uncharted film, replacing Levy who had to leave due to scheduling conflicts. Probably the biggest title that Trachtenberg has directed is 10 Cloverfield Lane, but he's also directed the Playtest episode for Black Mirror (the one starring Wyatt Russell and Hannah John-Kamen).
While some may scratch their heads that Tom Holland is too young to play adventurer Nathan Drake, the movie is said to focus on Drake's younger years as an adventurer. Most likely we'll also be meeting one of Drake's oldest allies, Victor Sullivan a.k.a. Sully. I'm just hoping they find a nice way to include this story into the canon of the Uncharted game franchise. Do we really need a full reboot of the story like the Tomb Raider movie with Alicia Vikander?
I have to say, Holland has been an instant A-lister since he got cast as the MCU's Peter Parker. Besides finding himself the star of the Uncharted franchise, he's also the male lead of another sci-fi franchise Chaos Walking where he will star opposite Star Wars sequel trilogy lead Daisy Ridley.
A release date for Sony's Uncharted film is yet to be announced.
