The Mandalorian: Taika Waititi Describes His IG-11 as 'A Child with a Gun'

After making a splash with Marvel Studios with Thor: Ragnarok, Taika Waititi has teamed up with Jon Favreau to work on The Mandalorian for Disney+. What's interesting is, Waititi is also voicing IG-11, the assassin droid from the trailer, and he talks a bit about his portrayal in the show.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Waititi said he tried to find a mix between Siri and HAL 9000 when he came up with IG-11's voice. Waititi also had to say this about the character: "[IG-11 is] very innocent and naive and direct and doesn't know about sarcasm and doesn't know how to lie… It's like a child with a gun."

Another character description for IG-11 is that he's constantly being mistaken for the more infamous IG-88, the droid hunter we meet in Empire Strikes Back. It's going to be funny watching the droid react to people mistaking him for the wrong bounty hunter in the show, but I bet it would be hilarious if 11 did run into IG-88, and 88 would be voiced by Waititi's What We Do in the Shadows co-star, Jemaine Clement.

For now, we only get to see glimpses of IG-11 in the Mandalorian teaser, but I'm sure that Disney will release one more full trailer as the November release date draws nearer. A lot of pressure is on The Mandalorian to deliver since it will be setting the bar for other upcoming Star Wars shows like Cassian Andor and Kenobi—kind of like how Iron Man set the bar for the rest of the MCU.

Good luck, Jon Favreau.

Catch The Mandalorian when it debuts alongside Disney+ which launches on Nov. 12.
