The Reason Why Peter Gets the Black Spider Suit in Spider-Man: Far From Home

Peter Parker's Spider-Man outfit is already pretty great, but he looks to be sporting a new black suit for Spider-Man: Far from Home. Besides a reason to sell more Spidey toys, the suit actually has a practical impact on the story.

As it turns out, Peter gets the suit so that no one would make the connection that he's Spider-Man. Talking to /Film, executive producer Eric Hauserman Caroll explains:

"Peter Parker pulls Nick aside and says, ‘Listen man, I really want to help. It sounds like you're really up against it. But there's gotta be somebody else you can call, and besides, last time I went on a field trip, Spider-Man showed up and saved the day. Don't you think somebody's going to connect the dots? My secret identity is important to me. If this guy shows up, saves the day, somebody's going to do the math. I really want to help you, but it seems like you've got everyone you need anyway, so if you don't mind…' and Nick Fury is like, ‘I totally understand.' He's like, ‘You do? That's great!' So he thinks he's off the hook and he takes off."

As it turns out, the design of the suit drew inspiration from both the comics and the films that have come before it. There's inspiration from Noir and Big-Time, but the design team also got some influences from in-universe SHIELD agents like Hawkeye and Black Widow. It's said that the Black Spider isn't as advanced as the Stark suit, but it exists so that people won't be able to immediately tell that this is Spider-Man.

Caroll continues to talk about the suit:

"The one thing he asks for them to keep were his goggles, because they help him focus his heightened senses… Because it's Spider-Man and we thought this was so cool, Jon Watts really wanted to find a way to make it less cool, so he gave him these cheesy flip-up versions of the Spider-Man goggles, like those ‘80s glasses. He has to operate them manually, there's no cool mechanism. It's so funny because we sent the design off to costumes and props, and of course the first design they sent us was awesome, like an Iron Man helmet. We're like, ‘No, that's the point – dumber. It's gotta look really dumb when he flips it up.' So we have a lot of fun with that, where he's talking to really imposing-looking characters and has to flip this up to talk to them."

At a point I was actually convinced that this was the MCU's version of the symbiote suit, but I guess they could save that for another time. We know that a Venom franchise exists, but it's unclear whether Sony is going to be willing to merge it with the MCU anytime soon. Hopefully they come up with something good because they also have to find a way to introduce the Fantastic Four and the X-Men as well.
