Sony Promises More R-Rated Animated Films Down the Line

There has always been a consensus that animated films are for children, so every animated movie that you see in theaters is usually kid-friendly. What's interesting is, Sony Animations is looking to make more adult-oriented animated movies down the line.

Talking to the Collision from Home virtual conference (via Deadline), Sony Pictures Animation President Kristine Belson explains, "I don't think you're going to see more family animated movies because that's very saturated… There will be more R-rated animated movies."

Admittedly Sony is yet to come out with an R-Rated animated film, but Belson says, "There are a couple we're working on and we're really excited about releasing our first one. I think you're going to see PG-13 animated movies, which is something you haven't seen before. Harder action-adventure sort of stuff."

We don't really know what movies Sony has planned down the line, but the emphasis on action-adventure gives me a feeling that they want to bring in more animated Spider-Man films after the success of Into the Spider-Verse. No doubt they have multiple other properties that could take the form of animation—just look at the PlayStation IPs. I'm sure fans would line up for a Jak and Daxter or Crash Bandicoot movie if Sony were to come up with one.

No release date has been set for these more mature films, but we do know that Sony is set to release their next movie, Connected on October 23. The Spider-Verse sequel is aiming for a release on Oct. 7, 2022.
