New Trailer for James Gunn's Brightburn Asks 'What if Superman was Evil'

James Gunn may be best known for his work on action comedies nowadays, but he also has quite the background when it comes to horror. Gunn is onboard as a producer for this horror film called Brightburn, and the trailer asks, "What if Superman was evil?"

This is the official description of the film:

What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.

The film has no qualms with comparing itself to Man of Steel, even going so far as to use the same font from the trailers. It is admittedly an interesting concept though. With superheroes always getting abused and teased for being different in their youth, they may as well have turned out like the kid in the trailer.

Admittedly, superhero horror is quite a niche genre in cinema. Besides Brightburn, I guess Fox's upcoming New Mutants is also trying to make a stab at the genre. For now, I guess the closest thing we have to a ‘horror' superhero movie is Chronicle by Josh Trank.

Brightburn is directed by David Yarovesky and stars Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, and Matt Jones. Catch the movie in theaters May 24.
