New Still of Young Diana in the ‘Amazon Olympics’ from Wonder Woman 1984

Though we know that Wonder Woman eventually leaves Themyscira in the first movie, we're going to be returning to the hidden island in a flashback in Wonder Woman 1984. Just in, we have a new still of Diana from the flashback, plus we get some insight on the ‘Amazon Olympics.'

Talking to Empire, director Patty Jenkins talks about the cultural significance of the event for the Amazons. She reveals:

"What I love about the Amazon Olympics is everything that we got to really celebrate in the first movie… Here are these people who are incredibly powerful and capable, but different in how they approach things. If you've been training for hundreds of years because of an impending invasion, you're going to be constantly working on all these skill sets. So, to me, every year, they would have these Olympics to see who's doing the best on horses or swimming the fastest, and seeing new tricks people have figured out."

We don't really know what part of the movie this flashback will be set in, but I have a feeling it's going to be somewhere in the beginning. While I'm sure there's going to be more interactions with gods, I don't think Diana really has a reason to come back to the island—unless the invisible jet is there, but I'm guessing that has something more to do with the Blackhawks rather than the Amazons.

If it weren't for COVID-19, we would have already seen Wonder Woman 1984, and even last year Jenkins was already expressing her regret that the film didn't come out back in November. With film lovers eagerly anticipating the reopening of theaters, I think Wonder Woman 1984 will be received with a warm reception.

Wonder Woman 1984 is set to hit theaters Aug. 14.
