Midsommar and Joker were two of the most critically praised movies from last year. Both film director Ari Aster and actor Joaquin Phoenix have been applauded for their performances in both films (respectively). While Hollywood is still getting up from lockdown now, it looks like Aster is teaming up with Phoenix for his next movie.

According to Discussing Film, Phoenix has signed on to star in Aster’s next movie, Beau is Afraid. The movie is described as a ‘surrealist horror film set in an alternate present,’ and Phoenix looks to be playing another character who has mother issues.

The synopsis goes:

An anxious man (Joaquin Phoenix) learns of the death of his mother under mysterious circumstances and upon traveling home makes an alarming discovery about his past. During his journey, he runs into various crazy supernatural threats.

We don’t know exactly what to expect when it comes to the story, but Aster has proven that he has good control of the atmosphere when it comes to his movies like Hereditary and Midsommar. Match that with the acting skills of Joaquin Phoenix, and we probably have another Oscar-nominated film on our hands.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of how Aster does the dialogue between characters, but his setting of films has been so masterful that I’m sure a lot of people can forgive him for that. Even Martin Scorsese—the bane of the Marvel Universe—has praised Aster for his work on ‘real cinema’.

No release date has been set for Beau is Afraid.
