James Gunn Doesn’t Think Thanos Should be Brought Back

Though Thanos had died in Avengers: Endgame, the rules of the comic book universe dictate that there's still a possibility for him to come back. With James Gunn being the first director to have Thanos appear in a full scene, he comments on the possibility of having the Mad Titan come back down the line.

During a Q&A on IG (via The Direct) Gunn was asked about a potential return of Thanos in the MCU, to which he replies, "No," and that there are "plenty of other stories to tell." With Thanos proving himself to be one of the most formidable villains in the MCU, it wouldn't make sense for him to be brought back from the dead; seeing as that negates everyone's sacrifice from Endgame.

If Thanos should come back, I'm fine if it would be for a small cameo. Rumor has it that a younger Thanos could actually appear in Eternals, thanks to some concept art that came out online. Then again, it's possible that Marvel could scrap this idea, but I don't see any other ideal cameo for him down the line.

As for the next Marvel big bad, the studio still has a lot to choose from—especially now that the Fox characters have joined the fray. A lot of people want Doctor Doom to be the next Thanos-level villain, but I'm excited for the likes of MODOK and Magneto to make their debuts. How about a new take on Apocalypse?

For now, the next MCU films set to come out is Black Widow, and it hits theaters Nov. 6.
