Ghostbusters 3 Underway with Director Jason Reitman

The Ghostbusters reboot was an absolute disaster in the box office, and it had nothing to do with the cast being all-female at all. Good news is, it looks like we're going to be coming back to the original world of the Ghostbusters that was started back in 1984.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Jason Reitman, son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, is now working on a Ghostbusters movie set in the same universe as the original. Reitman had this to say about landing the job:

"I've always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans… This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day."

Reitman senior is still part of the movie as well, but he's attached as the producer, a sort of ‘passing the torch' to his son. If you the younger Reitman doesn't deserve the job, he has very well made a name for himself, directing movies like Juno, Thank You for Smoking, and Up in the Air.

A few years ago, there was a pitch that Max Landis (Bright, American Ultra) had made for a Ghostbusters film that included both old and new characters. It was free to read up online but has since been taken down. I wonder if that has anything to do with this movie being made.

If anything, I'd be happy to see a new cast take center stage in the same universe, and I'm hopeful that the likes of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson would make an appearance. They all appeared in the reboot anyway. Why not the official follow-up?

Ghostbusters 3 is set to come out in 2020.
