George R.R. Martin Says Characters have Different Endings in the Books

Until now Game of Thrones fans are still griping over the finale that was Season 8, and the pressure is on for George R.R. Martin to deliver the next book The Winds of Winter. In the latest tell-all book released called Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon, Martin had revealed that while the show had some endings he had intentionally wanted, there were some characters that he had other plans for.

In Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon (via WinterisComing.net), Martin explains:

"It wasn't easy for me… I didn't want to give away my books. It's not easy to talk about the end of my books. Every character has a different end. I told them who would be on the Iron Throne and I told them some big twists like Hodor and ‘hold the door,' and Stannis's decision to burn his daughter. We didn't get to everybody by any means. Especially the minor characters, who may have very different endings."

We don't know who Martin means by ‘minor characters,' but it's possible he could be referring to Jaime Lannister or Brienne of Tarth. One character that people also think deserved better should have been Cersei Lannister, who had spent the majority of the final season just sitting on a balcony and drinking wine.

While diverging from the source material isn't always a bad thing—like The Lord of the Rings films prove—a lot of fans thought that the final season was kind of rushed and had lost its priorities when it comes to what made the show great. Personally, I would have preferred 13 episodes of people just talking and small fight scenes compared to 6 episodes where the plot moves illogically fast and we get to decisions that don't feel earned.

In another world, people would have been pleased with Jon Snow murdering Daenerys or Bran taking the throne, but since it was all crammed in six episodes, there wasn't any time for all of it to make sense.

For now, you can check out Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon for more behind-the-scenes stories and anecdotes. No release date has been set for Winds of Winter.
