Doctor Strange Star Mads Mikkelsen in Talks to Replace Johnny Depp as Grindelwald

While a lot of people hate that Johnny Depp has been asked to leave Fantastic Beasts 3, the production still has to move forward, and WB is on the search for Depp's replacement. As news has it, it looks like they've found the perfect actor to play this manipulative and crazy wizard.

According to Deadline Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Doctor Strange) is in early talks to replace Johnny Depp in the next Fantastic Beasts movie. We don't know how far negotiations have gone, but they better make a decision quick because cameras had started rolling back in Septermber.

I'll be honest, I was scratching my head on who could replace Depp in the role, but Mads Mikkelsen is perfect for the part. Though he was underutilized as a villain in the Doctor Strange film, he plays a fantastic Hannibal Lecter, and it's his finesse and demeanor that really sold the part of a sophisticated psychopath.

We don't know if the movie will have an in-canon explanation for why Grindelwald will look like Mikkelsen, but I'm open to them just changing his face and moving forward, much like what they did when Michael Gambon replaced Richard Harris as Dumbledore. Then again, Grindelwald has changed appearance for every Fantastic Beasts movie that he's been in, so it would be easy to just have him change his look for whatever reason.

For now, Fantastic Beasts 3 has met a significant delay, and is now set to come out on July 15, 2022.
