Avengers Endgame: Russos Confirm That Captain America Could Lift Mjolnir Since Age of Ultron

One of the most memorable scenes in Avengers: Endgame was the reveal that Captain America was capable of lifting Mjolnir, and everyone had started a debate online of just when Steve Rogers became worthy. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige had revealed back in May that Rogers had been worthy since Age of Ultron which sounded like a ret-con, but now the Russo Brothers themselves have doubled down on the theory.

When asked by a fan on the Reddit AMA about how Steve came to be worthy, Anthony Russo replied: "He always could. Our interpretation of the famous scene in Ultron was that when he realized he could pick up Mjolnir he quickly chose not to, because he didn't want to embarrass Thor."

Though we have it coming from Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and the directors of Endgame themselves, I'm sure some fans are still not taking this ret-con as canon. Personally, I side with the camp that believes that Rogers wasn't worthy at the time but eventually came to be worthy throughout the course of the films. If anything, Captain America is so ridiculously honest that it would be out of character for him to lie just to not embarrass Thor.

If you ask me, the only one who could really answer that question is Joss Whedon. He's the one who wrote Age of Ultron, and he's the one who has the proper idea on why Cap couldn't lift Mjolnir then.

For now, Avengers: Endgame is available for digital, but you can catch the movie on Blu-Ray/DVD when it comes out Aug. 13.
