James Cameron has huge plans to make Avatar an epic franchise. There are currently four sequels planned, but the problem is that the release date for the second film keeps getting pushed back. The last time Avatar 2 lost its release date was when it was taken off the calendar completely, but now it looks like the sequel finally has an official release date that it will keep: December 21, 2018.

Well, we're assuming it's Avatar 2 since 20th Century Fox just announced an untitled film from Lightstorm Entertainment, James Cameron's production company will be released on that date. According to Deadline, the film has to be Avatar 2. We've various reports saying that the film is set for 2018 for awhile, and this is the kind of film usually released around Christmas, so it makes sense that it's indeed Avatar 2.

When the film was first announced, the release date was set to December 2014, but since James Cameron's script expanded to three films rather than the originally planned two, the project took longer than expected. Then the film was pushed back to 2016, then to 2017. When Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars: Episode VIII would be released in December 2017, Avatar 2's release was erased from the calendar without a new date.

At this point, let's just cross our fingers and hope that its release date won't be pushed back further. Are you excited to see Avatar 2 and the other sequels? Do you have high hopes for James Cameron's franchise? Head to the comments section below to share your thoughts.
