5 Biggest Reveals in The Matrix Resurrections Official Trailer

Since we recently got our first look at The Matrix Resurrections in the form of a brand-new teaser, which saw Keanu Reeves' long-awaited return as Neo, we've been struggling to contain our excitement for the fourth film in the hit sci-fi franchise that revolutionized cinema way back in 1999, pioneering ground-breaking special effects set against a noirish-stylized dystopian setting, with a plot that bends your mind like a spoon (even though there is no spoon). Now, as promised in that first teaser, the first official trailer for the upcoming sequel has just been uploaded.

The original teaser didn't reveal all that much, but at the same time showed more than we expected from a trailer-for-a-trailer. We got to see Keanu Reeves reprising his role as Neo, and some glimpses of action sequences that look pretty promising, to say the least. But now, it's time to 'jack-in' to the Matrix by checking out the official new trailer below:

We think you'll agree that it looks pretty mind-blowing! But you're probably also thinking, 'What is going on?!' And let's face it - it wouldn't be The Matrix without leaving us feeling overwhelmed in more ways than one, which is part of the intrigue of this incredible sci-fi franchise. While we think the filmmakers really missed a trick not calling the upcoming film 'The Matrix Rebooted', the new film still looks pretty spectacular, and will likely 'reboot' - pun most definitely intended - many things we love about the original 1999 film.

Either way, here are the 5 biggest reveals in the new trailer...

1. Neo is still Neo

We first see Keanu Reeves in a therapy session with Neil Patrick Harris' character. 'Thomas' - which is what his therapist calls him - appears to be living in a regular-looking world, going about his daily life, just as he was in the original. But clearly, things aren't what they seem. He's talking about his dreams, describing them as anything but, and asks his therapist if he's 'crazy', to which his therapist says, 'We don't use that word in here'. So it would seem that Neo has somehow been reverted back to Thomas Anderson - the alias created by the Matrix - and that he's discovering the facade all over again, with many scenes throughout the trailer suggesting that he's onto something big.

2. Trinity is Back

Thomas meets Carrie-Anne Moss in a coffee shop, and the two appear to shake hands. Moss is presumably reprising her role of Trinity, however, while they don't appear to know each other, she does ask Thomas if they've ever met. And while it may take a while for the two to remember each other in the movie, fans of the originals will love this reunion. But what's even more awesome is seeing the actress back in action alongside Thomas - or Neo. There are plenty of sequences in the trailer with Trinity at the forefront, including a banshee-like scream that seems to produce echoes of her form, riding on the back of a motorcycle with Neo, watching helicopters blow up from rooftops, and, of course, kicking the butts of police offers in slow motion.

3. There's a Morpheus-like Character

Unfortunately, it has long been confirmed that Laurence Fishburne won't be reprising his role of Morpheus in the new movie. However, that hasn't stopped the creators from bringing in a character who looks to be filling those boots. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II appears to be a similar character, as he's wearing a sleek suit and rounded shades not unlike the ones Morpheus rocks in the original. He also offers a blue pill and red pill to Thomas, saying 'Time to fly.' But given the fact that The Matrix movies take place inside a simulation, it's possible that this is Morpheus, just in a different form. It wouldn't the first time the franchise has done this, as the 'Oracle' actress Gloria Foster died while filming The Matrix Reloaded, and was replaced by Mary Alice for the third entry - a recasting that was explained within the film's narrative.

4. They're 'Going Back' into the Matrix

It will come as no surprise to learn that Neo and Trinity are going back into the Matrix. How exactly this will unfold remains a mystery, and until we see the credits roll on the new movie, we won't really know much, as a Matrix movie is hardly the kind that will give away too many answers before it's released. Nevertheless, the trailer does reveal quite a bit, in particular the fact that Thomas (aka Neo) appears to be re-discovering the facade that is the Matrix all over again, and is soon recruited by the characters played by Jessica Henwick and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, both of whom look like this movie's answer to the original's Trinity and Morpheus (although their roles are undisclosed). There are all sorts of mind-bending sequences in the new trailer, such as walking through mirrors, the morphing of reflections and an explosive fight in a Dojo. Classic Matrix stuff then.

5. There are Agents

It wouldn't be a Matrix movie without those pesky agents, and the trailer isn't shy about revealing some new shade-wearing suits. While Hugo Weaving is yet another original actor who sadly won't be returning to the fold, we're pretty sure the fourth installment has some new villains up its sleeve. In the trailer, the agents are up to their old tricks - morphing from 'regular' citizens, and dodging bullets in fast motion. Actor Jonathan Groff makes an appearance at the end of the trailer, and says to Neo, "After all these years, going back to where it all started - back to the Matrix". As for whether Groff is the new villain or not, or even an agent of some kind, we'll just have to wait and see.

The original teaser was first revealed at a Warner Bros. panel at CinemaCon, which promised that the full traler would be released today - and they sure delivered on that promise. The film was originally set for release on May 21 this year, which, strangely, was also the original date forJohn Wick: Chapter 4, another Keanu Reeves-led action movie that's also the fourth one in its series. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, just like a huge number of other movies, The Matrix Resurrections was pushed back to later this year.

But things are finally taking shape, with two new trailers and an official website to keep us entertained in the meantime - which is a lot for fans who haven't had anything in the way of The Matrix since 2003, when The Matrix Revolutions was released in theaters, which was the third and final chapter in the trilogy. While the two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, were critically panned, the franchise still grossed just shy of $2 billion worldwide.

The Matrix Resurrections is produced, co-written and directed by Lana Wachowski, and will see the return of Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith, who will be reprising their roles as Neo, Trinity and Niobe, respectively. Newcomers include Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jones and Christina Ricci. Sadly, Laurence Fishburne won't be returning as Morpheus, but you can still see him fighting alongside Reeves in the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4.

The Matrix Resurrections will premiere in theaters on December 22, 2021, and will also stream simultaneously on HBO Max in the US. If, however, you feel like time is going to be moving in slow motion until then, you can stream all The Matrix movies online.
