20 Amazing Female Hero Teams

The new Ghostbusters movie promises to deliver a team of ladies kicking butt. But there are lots of powerful female relationships to celebrate in sci-fi and fantasy, whether romantic or platonic. Let’s take a look at some of the most awesome relationships between heroic leading ladies.  Be sure to mention your favorites, whether on this list or otherwise, in the comments!

  1. Jessica Jones and Trish Walker

Throughout Jessica Jones, Jessica’s relationship with her adoptive sister Trish saves her again and again. In turn, Jessica saved Trish from her abusive mother and helps her become a hero. Trish is definitely Jessica’s greatest source of support and it’s only together that they manage to take down one of the most dastardly villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Jessica tells Trish “I love you” in one of the most powerful moments of the series- and it’s implied these are words she would never say to anyone else.

  2. The Sailor Soldiers

Sailor Moon is a show all about girls empowering each other and the bond between the all-female Sailor Soldier crew is heartwrenching and epic. These girls repeatedly die for each other, bring each other back from the brink of death and save the universe with the pure power of their love for each other. It’s a friendship that literally transcends lifetimes.

And it’s not all melodramatics- we also see them get into silly bickering matches, hang out at the arcade and act like any teenage girlfriends. And of course, Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus have that beautiful time-transcending romance that gave many a queer girl validation and got her heart fluttering.

  3. Xena and Gabrielle

Xena and Gabrielle’s relationship was what made Xena: Warrior Princess such a powerful tale for many women. Gabrielle is a dissatisfied farm girl before she is saved by Xena. She’s inspired to follow in Xena’s footsteps and develops into a wonderful warrior in her own right. The bond between these women save them (and the world) again and again. They are literal soulmates- their souls are bound together throughout time.

The not-so-subtle romantic subtext between Xena and Gabrielle made them very important to the women-loving-women community. The producer of the Xena reboot has implied that this relationship will finally be made explicit in the planned remake

  4. The Birds of Prey

The boys can save the day but no one does it better than the Birds of Prey, DC Comics premiere female superhero team!  The team was started when Barbara Gordon (formerly Batgirl, but after being paralyzed she became the superhacker Oracle) recruited Dinah Lance, The Black Canary, as her partner. Both women helped each other rebuild and heal when their lives were falling apart, and they busted plenty of bad guys heads in the process. After this, many other women joined the team and similarly found a new lease on life. The team became a force to be reckoned with, toppling every type of evil from corrupt politicians to alien menaces. These women save many innocent people, but they also saved each other- all while being snarky, irreverent and awesome.

  5. Anthy and Utena

Anthy and Utena from Revolutionary Girl Utena show us that relationships between women can be powerful even when they’re complicated and messy. Both girls were manipulated and abused and as a result, there was a lot a resentment between them. They lied to each other, betrayed each other and Anthy even lashed out at Utena is a shocking way. However, despite knowing the worst of each other, their love endured and conquered the machinations of who tried to oppress and use them. They both changed each other for the better and the show focuses on how these women reaching out to each other changed the world. Even the last line of the show is an affirmation of how much this relationship means.

The fact that it’s intended to be a romantic relationship makes it even more powerful- stories of how love between women can be life-affirming and break through any obstacle are deeply valuable to many queer women.

  6. Buffy and Her Girls

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is well loved for its fierce, pun-slinging blonde hero and she wouldn’t be nearly as strong a character if it weren’t for her relationship with the women on her squad. Her tense and complicated friendship/rivalry/enmity/maybe-sometimes-flirtation with Faith made for compelling television and her relationship with her main girl Willow went through many trials and changes- but they always stuck together and changed each other for the better, even when Willow went evil for a little while.

  7. Misty Knight and Colleen Wing

Misty Knight and Colleen Wing are one of the most powerful female partnerships in Marvel Comics. The markswoman and martial artist form a formidable investigative team, calling themselves “The Daughters of the Dragon”. These ladies always have each other’s back- Misty first met Colleen when she saved her during a gunfight and Colleen’s advice helped Misty overcome her depression and start anew after she lost her arm and her job.

  8. Glinda and Elphaba

“And now whatever way our stories end, I know you have rewritten mine by being my friend/ Who can say if I’ve changed for the better, but because I knew you I have been changed for good.”

These lyrics from the heart wrenching song For Good sum up the relationship of Glinda and Elphaba from Wicked. This story casts the Wicked Witch and Good Witch from the Wizard of Oz, traditionally bitter foes, as women in a complicated, but ultimately beautiful, relationship. Glinda and Elphaba are complete opposites who start out hating each other, yet they eventually become essential to each other. They fail each other and argue often, but at the end of the story, they both admit they have become stronger thanks to each other. Elphaba even trusts Glinda to carry on for her in looking after Oz.

"You’ll always be with me, like a handprint on my heart."

  9. Batwoman and the Question

Kate Kane and Renee Montoya from DC Comics are women who are there for each other despite a difficult history. They started out as passionate lovers, but eventually had a hard breakup. Despite this, when they both became heroes, they were there to help each other. This is a great example of a female relationship because it shows even women who are exes can still care for each other and be friends.

  10. The Crystal Gems

Pearl, Garnet, Amethyst and the departed Rose Quartz from Steven Universe are actually non-binary, but considering they call themselves women on the show, I don’t think they’d object to being included on this list. The Gems have been saving humanity together for a thousand years and they form a sort of family, even raising and mentoring Steven together.

Their relationship can get, ahem, rocky- Pearl and Amethyst bicker constantly for example, not to mention the arc where Pearl and Garnet dealt with a breach of trust- but they always manage to save the day- and each other! Ruby and Sapphire’s romance is also completely adorable and very groundbreaking in terms of queer romance in children’s television.

  11. Wonder Woman's Crew

Wonder Woman is the champion of women, so it’s only natural she’d have a lot of strong relationships with the women around her. She has a gallivanting friendship with Etta Candy, a confident and playful women who is only too glad to help her kick butt. She also has her official sidekicks in Donna Troy and Cassandra Sandsmark. She has a sisterly relationship with Donna and went so far as to tell her even her most fabled weapon, the lasso of truth, was not worth one hair on Donna’s head. Meanwhile, Cassie idolized Wonder Woman and became a hero because of her. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg- Wondy also has many Amazon allies, including her rival-turned-friend Artemis and a blacksmith who has a little crush on her, Io.

  12. Korra and Asami

Korra and Asami from The Legend of Korra were originally rivals in a really cliché love triangle- both of them at odds over the affection of a boy named Mako. I wasn’t only the only viewer who bemoaned this tired trope. I wished these two smart, powerful women would just date each other instead of going after a boy who flip-flopped between them. And to my intense shock, my wish came true. The tired dynamic between Korra and Asami turned to a sincere friendship after they ditched Mako’s cheating heart. They became an unbeatable team.

Then the finale of the show and the creators themselves confirmed this relationship had turned romantic. Two girls went from bickering over a boy to being in a sweet, supportive romance with each other. This amazing transformation was unprecedented in Western children’s cartoons and left many fans sobbing with joy.

  13. The Girls of Shootaround

The high school basketball team of the webcomic Shootaround make an amazing zombie-killing squad. These girls make it through the apocalypse together with style, and there’s even an adorable budding romance between a few members. Kayla said she’d become a zombie together with Hotaru if she “turned”. That’s love!

  14. Sakura Kinomoto and Tomoyo Daidouji

When Sakura Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura became a magical girl, her friend Tomoyo knew right away and instantly decided to help her out- providing her with costumes and videotaping all her adventures. Tomoyo is always there for Sakura, but their relationship is a little complicated by the fact she has a crush on her, feelings she knows Sakura doesn’t return. However, Tomoyo handles herself gracefully and while she may be a little overzealous, she’s always there to give Sakura support whether in her heroics or day-to-day life.

  15. Alphys and Undyne

The relationship between Alphys and Undyne was a highlight of the game Undertale. The two nerds were hopelessly in love and hilariously awkward about it. Undyne’s hotblooded, violent personality bounced off Alphys’ brainy and insecure persona quite well and their relationship was made even more adorable by their mutual passion for anime. Even when Alphys revealed the full extent of her problems, Undyne supported her and tried to help her feel more confident in herself.

And if the player chooses to kill Undyne, Alphys is one of the last people she thinks of, which is just heartbreaking.

(And yes, they count as a hero team, they were both part of the team-up that helped the player during the final battle of one route).

  16. Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown

The friendship between Stephanie Brown (a Gotham hero calling herself the Spoiler who later became the fourth Robin and the third Batgirl) and Cassandra Cain (the second Batgirl who later called herself the Black Bat) was one of the big things that drew me into comics. Cassandra often seemed scary to thosearound her, but Stephanie saw the cool girl she was. Quiet and efficient Cassandra really bounced well off mouthy newbie Stephanie and they trained together, fought bad guys together and kept each other’s secrets.

  17. Antimony Carver and Katerina Donlan

Annie and Kat from the webcomic Gunnerkrigg Court have been through a lot together. Annie is difficult friend to have, with her magical destiny, jerk dad and emotional issues, so sometimes things get rough between them. But in the end, they magical mystery-solving team always endure. Kat gives Annie the support she desperately needs throughout her stressful life and Annie in turn supported Kat during her coming out.

  18. Kara Zor-el and Alex Danvers

The importance of Supergirl’s relationship with her adoptive sister on her self-titled show really came to the forefront in recent episode.  As another character puts it, Alex is Supergirl’s hero and Kara can’t do without her. At the same time, Alex is extremely protective of Kara and would do anything to avoid hurting her. A recent scene where she breaks down in tears when she reveals she did something Kara might hate her for was so intense and really showcased the strength of their bond.

  19. The Ladies of Fury Road

The women in Mad Max: Fury Road are a great example of a kickass female team working together to liberate themselves from a misogynist systems. George Miller made the right call when he decided the person rescuing the girls from sexual slavery should be a cool woman rather than a man- this transformed the movie into a rare action movie focused on women saving each other and fighting together.

  20. Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen

Princess Bubblegum and Marceline from Adventure Time are complete opposite with a complicated history. Yet their intense affection for each other was so clear that fans and even members of the staff were shipping them right out the gate. While their relationship has yet to become explicitly romantic in the show itself, they’ve repeatedly been shown to make a great team.
