Tanjiro’s Hanafuda Earrings Meaning in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Explained

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaibafollows Tanjiro Kamado and his journey as a demon slayer in a pursuit to destroy Muzan, the demon who massacred his family and turned his little sister, Nezuko, into a demon.

Fans of the popular show would notice that Tanjiro has some memorable features in this face. One of those is the Hanafuda earrings that he wore. A couple of times, this was used to let people know who Tanjiro is. Aside from that, it seems that some characters like Muzan know something else about the said earrings.

Those who watched the anime would know that the earring was given by his father. It could mean that it was passed on to different generations, but is there another meaning behind it? Find out!

Tanjiro’s Hanafuda Earrings Meaning

Since the earrings were passed onto Tanjiro by his father, it could just simply mean it is a family earring that needed to be given to their children. But what makes you think that this earring has a further meaning is that we all know that Tanjiro’s father is a Breath of the Sun user. So why did he give it to Tanjiro?

If you looked up the meaning of Hanafuda, it means playing flower cards. Just by looking at the earrings, they can be compared to a talisman with its design.

Aside from Tanjiro, Yoriichi Tsugikuni also had the same earrings. If you don’t know him, he is the first Breath of the Sun user. This connects the fact that Tanjiro’s father is a Breath of the Sun user which could mean that the earrings must mean that. The manga showed a connection between Tanjiro and Tsugikuni’s family as well, which deepens the meaning of the earrings.

Another noticeable fact is that not everyone in the family gets to wear the same earrings. Nezuko isn’t wearing one. Yoriichu Tsugikuni’s older brother is also not wearing the earrings. Add these to the observations from above, we can conclude that only Breath of Sun users has the earrings. 

There was also one flashback wherein Tanjiro’s father convinces Tanjiro to pass down the earrings and the Hinokami Kagura Dance which means that the power must be given to the next Breath of User user.
