Is My Hero Academia Manga Better Than the Anime? How Is It Different?

My Hero Academia or Boku no Hero Academia was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump in July 2014. The manga follows Izuku Midoriya, a teenage boy who was born without superpowers or as the manga calls it, Quirks. Despite this, Midoriya wants to become a superhero to follow Japan’s greatest hero, All Might’s footsteps. 

The manga is such a huge hit that it is currently ongoing with over 20 volumes, with Volume 29 releasing earlier this year. The popularity of the manga did not stop there as it was adapted into an anime in April 2016. My Hero Academia Season 5 is scheduled to premiere on March 27, 2021.

Is My Hero Academia Manga Better Than the Anime?

Most fans praised the anime version for staying true to the manga. But of course, both platforms have a different impact depending on the reader. Manga fans have the privilege to know what happens to the story first as the manga is released earlier than the anime. The manga also shows more contemporary pop culture references that won’t be seen in the anime as per rights issues. 

Meanwhile, there are fans who prefer to watch than read. With that, the anime version is ideal for them. This version also has fewer fillers and actually gives life to the characters through animation. 

The good thing is that both versions are similar to each other so it will be a matter of perspective for the fan. My Hero Academia fans can also read the manga then watch the anime, right? 

How Is It Different? 

As mentioned earlier, there were a few differences between the two such as the timing and rights issues. There are also a few more distinctions between the two that manga readers and anime fans will notice. 

1. Censorship

Since the anime is intended for kids to watch, there are a lot of gruesome scenes that were not shown. The anime doesn’t want kids to see scenes that are pretty much difficult to understand so fans who are interested in gruesome scenes might enjoy the manga version. 

2. Extended Scenes

Fans have noticed that there are added scenes in the anime that are not in the manga. An example would be more scenes for Midoriya and Uraraka, which actually create romantic tension between the two. 

3. All Might and Midoriya’s Relationship

In the anime, All Might trains Midoriya but most of the time he’s giving encouraging words and cheers to his disciple. But in the manga version, All Might is stricter and often pushes Midoriya to his limits. 

While these differences seem to be vital for some fans, by the end of the day, the preference still matters. Whether the fan reads the manga or watches the anime, My Hero Academia is still brilliant on whichever platform.
