12 Anime That Has a Sequel


Before we begin listing the 12 anime that got a sequel in 2021, we have to discuss what a sequel is. According to Oxford Languages, it is a recorded, broadcasted, and published work that is a continuation of the story or series. It is a development of the theme of an earlier one.

Since there are a lot of anime that got a sequel, we decided to focus on the recent ones which were the shows that got a continuation in 2021. There might be some shows that are not familiar to others which is why this is a great chance to check out which series have a sequel!

  1. Cells at Work!

    Also known as Hataraku Saibo, Cells at Work! is a Japanese manga series that released its first season on July 8, 2018. It takes place inside the human body and mainly focuses on a rookie blood cell and a relentless white blood cell. On January 9, the second season started and ran until February 27, 2021. This new season has 8 episodes.

  2. Re: Zero

    Re: Zero – Starting Life in Another World was originally a light novel that received a manga adaptation and eventually an anime. The second season was originally planned to be released in April 2020 but was delayed because of the pandemic. With this, it has been decided that it will have a split-cour format wherein the first half was released on July 2020 and the second half aired on January 2021.

  3. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

    The manga adaptation was made after the light novels were acquired by Micro Magazine. With its popularity, it got an anime adaptation with its first season that aired from October 2018 to March 19, 2020. The second season was released in January 2021, and the second spin-off manga was also turned into an anime which was released in April 2021.

  4. The Quintessential Quintuplets

    The series follows Futaro Uesugi who hired a tutor for identical quintuplets. The main premise is that Futaro will marry one of the quintuplets but the identity of the bride was released toward the end of the story. The second season was released in January 2021, and it was confirmed that a film will air in 2022.

  5. Beastars

    Viz Media got the English license of the manga. An anime adaptation was then made by Orange that premiered in October 2019. It immediately got a second season which aired from January to March 2021. The story focuses on a modern world where anthropomorphic animals live in a society and were divided into herbivores and carnivores.

  6. B: The Beginning Succession

    It is an original net animation or ONA that was made by Kazuto Nakazawa and Production I.G. Its first season was released on Netflix in March 2018. Eventually, the second season premiered on March 18, 2021. It is a crime and action series that follows Koku; Keith who is a legendary investigator.

  7. Moriarty the Patriot

    A mystery anime added to the list is Moriarty the Patriot. It was based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. The sequel of the series focused on William James Moriarty, the nemesis of Holmes from his youth. Part 2 of the show was released on April 4, 2021.

     

  8. Otona no Boguya-san

    Also known as Armor Shop for Ladies and Gentlemen, Otona no Boguya-san is a four-panel manga published in September 2017. An anime adaptation was made and was released on October 9, 2018. It was specially made to be a short anime with 4 minutes each episode. The story continued and a prequel aired on January 2, 2021.

     

  9. The Rising of a Shield Hero

    Moving on to a Japanese dark fantasy anime on the list, The Rising of a Shield Hero centers on Naofumi Iwatani who was summoned into a parallel world. He and three other young men were sent there to become Cardinal Heroes who will fight against monsters. It has been confirmed that the second season of the series is set to air in April 2022.

  10. Zombie Land Saga Revenge

    The first season was entitled Zombie Land Saga and was released in October 2018. The sequel, entitled Zombie Land Saga Revenge, aired on April 2021. It follows six legendary girls, who came from various Japanese eras, brought back by Kotaro Tatsumi. The twist is that they are all zombies, and they are put together as an idol group.

  11. Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun

    From October 2019 to March 2020, the first season of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun was released. The sequel quickly followed by April 2021. It is about Iruma Suzuki who was sold to a demon by his human parents. He was then taken to a Demon World wherein he was enrolled at Babyls School for Demons.

  12. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

    The series made its debut in January 2017. It was followed by a second season with a new title, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S in July 2021. The story centers on Kobayashi, a programmer and office worker, who was greeted by a large dragon by her door. The said dragon transformed into a human girl named Tohru who wears a maid outfit.
