10 Funniest Moments From Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Perhaps one of the biggest takeaways from the Rian Johnson-directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi is how much humor is packed into the film. Sure, we’ve seen plenty of jokes in the saga films, before, and K-2SO’s role in Rogue One was almost entirely comic relief, but Episode VIII truly ups the ante, which is just one of several ways Johnson shakes up the status quo we’ve become accustomed to.

That being said, here are the 10 funniest moments from Star Wars: The Last Jedi:

  1. Please Hold For Hux

Much like The Force Awakens, the introduction of Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron in The Last Jedi shows the ace Resistance pilot using his sense of humor to get under the First Order’s skin. Radioing over to the Mega-class Star Destroyer Supremacy, Poe asks to speak with General Hux, yet refuses to acknowledge him when he speaks. Saying he’ll continue to hold, Poe reiterates how urgent his message for Hux truly is, adding that it pertains to his mother. Of course, Hux soon realizes he’s being toyed with, but it was a fun moment that immediately set the precedent for the type of jokes we were in store for as the film went on.

  2. The Finn Awakens

When we last saw Finn in The Force Awakens, it was shortly after his duel with Kylo Ren and as such, he was placed in a bacta suit to recover from his injuries. In The Last Jedi, that’s once again where we find the former FN-2187, but he quickly opens his eyes and comes to. As Finn and BB-8 are returning from their mission, the latter lets out a few chirps that, while indistinguishable to us, prompt Poe to say “Finn? Naked? Leaking?” Then, with little delay, we see Finn stumbling down the hall in the bacta suit, with fluid squirting out from all sides. Naturally, Finn’s primary concern was Rey’s whereabouts, so you can forgive the fact that he neglected to get dressed before leaving the med bay.

  3. Luke’s Lightsaber Lob

The entire plot of The Force Awakens was built around the search for Luke Skywalker, who we learned had gone into a self-imposed exile after he was betrayed by his nephew Ben Solo/Kylo Ren. That being said, many fans were left perplexed when the film ended with a shot of Rey finding the aging Jedi Master on Ahch-To, offering him his old lightsaber, and then… nothing. However, shortly after the start of The Last Jedi, we finally pick up where TFA left off, as we see Rey still extending her arm to offer Luke his long-lost weapon. Then, without saying a word, he grabs the lightsaber with his robotic hand and proceeds to toss it over his shoulder before walking away. It’s one of those moments that funny simply because of how unexpected it is, but either way, it definitely works.

  4. Porg-Shaming Chewie

In the buildup to The Last Jedi, rumors were running rampant that Chewbacca would eat a porg in the film because of a photo that seemingly showed the Wookiee with a few white feathers around his mouth. And while we don’t actually see him eat one of the adorable, bird-like creatures onscreen, we do see him roasting several of them over a fire outside of the Millennium Falcon. Before he’s able to dig into his dinner, though, a few porgs catch Chewie in the act and look on in horror at the prospect of him chowing down on one of their friends. It’s assumed that this ruins the meal for the Wookiee, but in all seriousness, he very well may have just eaten them anyway once the camera panned away.

  5. Feeling The Force

Rey convincing Luke to train her in the ways of the Force takes some time, but eventually, the aging Jedi caves in and agrees to pass his knowledge on to her. Telling Rey to close her eyes and reach out, Luke asks her if she’s able to feel the Force, at which point he begins tickling her hand with a palm blade. When Rey shrieks out with glee for “feeling the Force,” Luke slaps her hand with the blade, proving that the young girl’s training wouldn’t be fun and games.

  6. Rey And The Caretakers

Luke isn’t the only one on Ahch-To who doesn’t take too kindly to Rey’s presence. After accidentally blasting a hole through one of the huts, several of the island’s alien caretakers can be seen repairing the damage, and although their language is indistinguishable, Rey posits that the creatures don’t seem to like her. Well, even if they did then, they surely didn’t later in the film, when Rey accidentally slices a massive boulder in half with her lightsaber, sending the rock tumbling down a hill and taking out one of the caretaker’s wheelbarrows. As the caretakers look up the hill at Rey in disdain, it becomes ever more apparent that she’s not welcome there.

  7. Shirtless Kylo

The mental link that Supreme Leader Snoke establishes between Rey and Kylo Ren is an example of one of several new Force abilities we see in The Last Jedi. Through it, not are Rey and Kylo able to connect their minds at random times but they can also see each other when it happens. However, with these sessions occurring completely at random, the odds of catching one of them in a precarious position if fairly high, but thankfully, the only instance we see is when the two are connected while the former Ben Solo is shirtless. Clearly, Kylo’s surprisingly buff physique proves distracting, though, because Rey quickly asks if he can cover up.

  8. BB8 Gets Stuffed

Admittedly, the Canto Bight scenes weren’t as great as expected, but there were still some laughs to be found on the casino planet. For example, at one point, we see a small, drunken alien stumble over to BB8 and begin stuffing him with coins, presumably mistaking the astromech droid for a slot machine. As BB8 rolls away, we can hear the coins jingling around inside him, and they prove useful later when he shoots them out like pellets to take down a group of guards.

  9. Hands Off The Holster, Hux

The tension between Kylo Ren and General Hux was first established in The Force Awakens, and in The Last Jedi, it’s clear that their relationship hasn’t really improved. After Rey’s lightsaber explodes, we see Kylo Ren lying on the floor of Supreme Leader Snoke’s throne room, seemingly unconscious. Realizing that the Supreme Leader is dead, Hux eyeballs Kylo and slowly reaches for his blaster. However, as soon as his hand touches his holster, Kylo begins to stir, prompting Hux to play it cool and close his cloak, as if he had no foul intentions. Good thing, too, because Kylo Ren surely wouldn’t have any patience for insubordination.

  10. Get That Dirt Off Your Shoulder

Mark Hamill’s performance in The Last Jedi is arguably his best outing as Luke Skywalker. Still, despite reprising the role that helped jumpstart his career, traces of Hamill’s true personality can still be seen. Case in point, when Luke (or rather his astral form) endures a barrage of blaster fire from the First Order’s AT-M6 walkers, he emerges from the dust and proceeds to brush off his right shoulder. It’s pure Hamill snark, and not only is it a funny moment but it also infuriates Kylo Ren, which – ultimately – is Luke’s intention.
