Zootopia Directors Discuss Making of the Movie and Potential Sequel, TV Spin-Off

Zootopia had been an unexpected massive hit at the blockbuster, garnering a whopping $993 million worldwide since its release in early March, that it's no wonder if audiences clamored for more of its characters. Apparently, the movie's directors have pondered on that possibility as well. However, as with any Disney animated film sequel, we might not see Zootopia 2 or a TV spin-off so soon since the filmmakers aren't in any kind of hurry to finish one.

This patience and unhurried vision during directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Speaking about the gigantic success of the Disney film and a potential sequel, Howard said:

The fan response is a huge help for that kind of thing.

He added that he and Moore were overwhelmed with the positive audience reception.

I think we all loved the world so much and got so attached to the characters, that we actually got a little sad when the film finally came out [because] we felt like, ‘Well, we're kind of done with it.' And it's nice that there's this potential for it to get bigger.

While there seems to be no plans nor announcements coming from Disney itself, it's not hard to imagine a spin-off, short, or even another full animated sequel. This is apparent with the movie's predecessors in animated success: the likes of Finding Nemo (2003), which now has an upcoming sequel titled Finding Dory (2016); Tangled, which (2010) is being reimagined with an animated series titled Tangled: Before Ever After (2017); Frozen with its Frozen 2 in the works; even the action movie Big Hero 6 (2014) has its own series headed for Disney XD.

In any case, the directors aren't rushing the process. They know fully well how much time it takes to create or even revisit the world of Zootopia.

Howard said:

We cut a lot out during the making of the film. We introduced districts that we talked about that couldn't fit in, other characters that we eliminated from the movie. There's a vast potential for this world, so I'd love to see something more come from it.

Moore added:

So much of the time spent onZootopiawas inventing it. What does it look like? How does it work? And it would be great to go back to it and explore farther, more of it, rather than being theoretical and having to invent it [again].

It's apparent how the filmmakers intend on involving more characters and showcasing more details into their work if there is to be a Zootopia sequel, and with the limited time of an animated feature film, it seems that their best option would be a TV spin-off series.

We'll see how it goes, but we're keeping our fingers crossed.

Zootopia will arrive on Blu-ray and DVD on June 7.
