X-Men: Dark Phoenix Director Still Hoping For Gambit At Disney

For years, X-Men fans have been looking forward to Channing Tatum's Gambit movie. However, despite the many attempts at getting the film to move forward, Gambit always ended up finding itself in production limbo.

Now that Disney has completed its acquisition of 21st Century Fox and the studio's various film and television assets, the Mickey Mouse House is in full ownership of the X-Men franchise, Gambit along with it. While the film still doesn't seem to be going nowhere X-Men: Dark Phoenix director, writer, and producer Simon Kinberg still hopes that Gambit gets to happen.

Speaking in an interview with Variety, Kinberg addresses his concern about the franchise in the face of the Disney-Fox merger.

"The latest is we'll see, like honestly since the merger happened I think all of the movies that are at Fox, not just the Marvel movies but all the movies at Fox are being evaluated and they'll figure out what they want to do with them," Kinberg says in his interview with the entertainment news outlet, "I'd love to see it happen, I love the idea of Channing playing Gambit, I think we have a great script and I think it was a role he was born to play. It's a character I grew up loving and I know the fans love, so I suspect/hope it'll happen."

Before the film got stuck in limbo, details for the Gambit movie described the project as a romantic comedy and as a heist film. Dealing with the 70s to the present day era, Gambit had mutant gangs and dealt with "the notion of what it means to belong, tribalism in this bayou like environment."

Aside from Gambit, Fox's X-Force and Doctor Doom movies have also been placed in the backburner.

Do you think Disney's going to see these projects through? Let's wait and see.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix premieres June 7, 2019.
