X-Men: Dark Phoenix Director Simon Kinberg On Why “SPOILER” Is Killed

Warning: This article contains spoilers for X-Men: Dark Phoenix based on the footage of the film's trailer.

X-Men fans had a feeling that a certain mutant would die after seeing the very first trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and now it looks like the film's newest promotional video confirms what everyone's been suspecting all along: Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) ends up dying at the hands of Jean Grey (Sophie Turner).

In the most recent trailer for Dark Phoenix, fans get to see an extended scene where Jean returns to their hometown. The psychic is confronted by the X-Men, but things take a bad turn. When Mystique tries to reach out to Jean, the psychic mutant loses her control and ends up sending out a shockwave that kills the shapeshifter.

Fans have been expecting Fox to keep Mystique's death a secret till the film's release – after all, Lawrence has been a key part of the new X-Men franchise. Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly,Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg explains why they had to reveal the character's passing.

"Well, the thought process behind that was to primarily show that this is a movie that is unlike other X-Men movies," the filmmaker told the publication, "It's a movie where shocking things happen, where intense, dramatic things happen. People don't just fall off buildings and dust themselves off and walk away. There's a reality to this movie and a consequence of this movie. Even more than that, it was to show that Jean/Dark Phoenix is genuinely a threat to everyone, including the X-Men."

Though it was a difficult decision, Mystique's death would have an impact on almost every character in Dark Phoenix, so it was only right to feature the character's passing earlier on.

What do you think? Should Fox have just kept Mystique's death under wraps?

X-Men: Dark Phoenix premieres on June 7, 2019.
