Is Tony Stark about to be out of the gang--at least for the meantime?
New reports have confirmed that Avengers: Infinity War star and Marvel darling Robert Downey, Jr. is will be the titular character in The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal manage to beat out other hopefuls in what was a very competitive bidding for the rights to production, including the early draft for the script by Tom Shepherd.
The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle also has Stephen Gaghan signed up as director. Other names that have been confirmed for the project include Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum as producers. Downey and his wife Susan will also be onboard as producers.
Doctor Dolittle had already seen the big screen back in 1967 as a musical by Richard Fleischer. There was also that stint in 1998, where Eddie Murphy was cast for the role in a comedy movie that turned out four more sequels.
The move will give Downey his third franchise with Marvel. But more than that, this is also a well-thought out progress. There are no Iron Man standalone movies as Marvel moves forward with its Grand Plan. In the future, apart from the ensemble movies like Avengers: Infinity War and cameo and/or meaningful role appearances in other heroes' solo films, the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, and in the near future, Thor will no longer have their own movies to bask in.
Captain America's Chris Evans seems to be thinking of hanging his vibranium shield earlier--once he finishes his six-movie contract--while we don't know if the same will go for the Marvel veterans. But even if Tony Stark hangs around as mentor to the younger Avengers, a project outside of the hero franchise shouldn't hurt his schedule.
