Why Zack Snyder Didn’t Want Grant Gustin’s The Flash in Batman v Superman

Grant Gustin has been portraying The Flash/Barry Allen in The CW series of the same title since 2014. It would have made perfect sense to cast someone who had long been playing the character on television if the character's cameo is needed in a film. Apparently though, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder didn't think Gustin's TV version was what he needed for the upcoming DC film.

Speaking to the New York Daily News, Snyder said the nature of The CW's The Flash isn't a match for what he's planning for Justice League.

Snyder explained:

I just don't think [Gustin] was a good fit. I'm very strict with this universe and I just don't see a version where...that (tone is) not our world.
Even if Grant Gustin is my favorite guy in the world and he's very good, we made a commitment to the multiverse (idea), so it's just not a thing that's possible.

It appears that Geoff Johns previous hint that all DC shows and films taking place in the same multiverse is true, albeit not the same universe.

Obviously, Batman v Superman isn't an "exciting and upbeat and happy" film. Those words were used by Supergirl actress Melissa Benoist to describe the Flash/Supergirl crossover. That would mean Ezra Miller's Scarlet Speedster in Batman v Superman is shades darker than what fans have been used to seeing in The CW. In any case, we can't say for sure which version is better. Miller's take on Barry Allen will only appear in what Deborah Snyder has defined as a cameo-like role.

Still, I'm interested to see how his appearance will play out in the DC Extended Universe, especially since there's a possibility of the character being able to time travel in the cinematic universe.

Which version of The Flash do you think is better – Miller's or Gustin's?

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters this Friday, March 25.
