Why Nick Fury Isn’t In Captain America: Civil War

Nick Fury has been one of the major players in the Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since Captain America: Civil War saw the return of several Phase One and even Phase Two Marvel characters, it begs the question why Samuel L. Jackson's eye-patched spy wasn't in the movie's cast roster.

Well, there's a perfectly good reason and the writers of Civil War explained why during a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times. As stated by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, they simply didn't want the character siding with either Team Cap or Team Iron Man.

Markus broke it down in his explanation:

Primarily it felt like one too many possible opinions. We didn't want him to take one side or the other, because that's not his place in the universe. And then we didn't want another, ‘Is he still with the government? Is he opposed to the government but supporting the government?' It got to be the potential for a lot more polemic discussion that the movie did not have room for.

The scribe added how Fury is akin to a "parent figure" and that he and McFeely wanted the "kids," a.k.a. the Avengers and other heroes settling their issue on their own.

As for any likelihood of seeing Jackson in an MCU movie again, there has been no official announcement of him taken off the franchise any time soon. However, it remains unknown which film he'll likely appear in. It was reported back in February that he could be in Thor: Ragnarok. That isn't certain, but he did say last month that he expects to be in the two-part Avengers: Infinity War films.

As for Markus and McFeely's stance on the matter, they said they believe Fury would most probably be in the Infinity War movies, which would make sense since the actor has two films left in his Marvel contract. Also, if the actor would be leaving the franchise with a bang, there wouldn't be any other film better for that than the Infinity War movies.
