Why J.J. Abrams Regrets Turning Down Star Wars: Episode VIII

Many of us who have seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens couldn't wait to see Episode VIII already. We already know that Rian Johnson (Looper) will taking the reins from J.J. Abrams' sequel, but according to Abrams good friend Greg Grunberg, the filmmaker may be feeling some regret over leaving the franchise behind.

Speaking to The Washington Post, Grunberg opened up about what J.J. Abrams had told him upon recently reading the script for Star Wars: Episode VIII.

He read it and said something he never, ever says, he said: ‘It's so good, I wish I were making it.' He may have said something one time on ‘Lost,' with Damon [Lindelof, the co-creator], but I never hear him express regret like that.

Abrams' statement sounds promising for the sequel, so it's exciting to know that Star Wars: Episode VIII has a script remarkable enough to make the director regret turning down the film. I thought he did a fantastic job with The Force Awakens, and I just wish he'd be the one to helm the rest of the trilogy. Let's just hope that Rian Johnson's direction will help bring the good script to life and surpass The Force Awakens.

Star Wars: Episode VIII (which will eventually get its subtitle) will open in theaters on May 26, 2017.
