Why Jane is Missing in Thor: Ragnarok

Since Natalie Portman announced last year that she's done with Marvel, we knew that Jane Foster won't appear in Thor: Ragnarok for a while now. What we didn't know was how the filmmakers would fit Jane's absence into the story.

When EW asked Thor star Chris Hemsworth about Jane's disappearance in Ragnarok, he said that the two have broken up, and Thor has no problem with it.

"He's off exploring the universe, still trying to police it and control the mayhem," Hemsworth said. "But he's certainly enjoying being a drifter, being a solo cowboy out there."

Marvel president Kevin Feige added that Valkyrie could fill the void that Jane left.

"We wanted Thor to encounter somebody that was near his equal and that his relationship with Jane may have evolved in unexpected ways in between The Dark World and Ragnarok and we wanted to pit him against a character who was much more his equal and in many ways his superior," Fiege explained. "Valkyrie is trying to not embrace any sort of Asgardian heritage that she has. Thor thinks maybe that will create a bond between them and, on the contrary, she wants to forget it all entirely."

Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Ragnarok is set to release on Nov. 3.
