Why Ben Solo Became Kylo Ren, According to J.J. Abrams and Adam Driver

It looks like Han and Leia had not been the most attentive parents.

When Kylo Ren was introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it seemed pretty clear that the reason for his turn to the Dark Side had been because he was a "bad seed." Apparently though, it's not so much this case as Han and Leia being too preoccupied with their own agendas.

In a new The Force Awakens' Blu-ray featurette released on the official Star Wars page on YouTube, director J.J. Abrams and actor Adam Driver share their thoughts on the reason why Ben Solo turned rogue and went full on Kylo.

Driver explains how Han and Leia sort of abandoned Ben when he was a child:

If you really imagine the stakes of him, in his youth, having all these special powers and having your parents kind of be absent during that process on their own agendas, [being] equally as selfish, he's lost in the world that he was raised in, and feels that he was kind of abandoned by the people that he's closest with.

He's angry because of that, I think, and he has a huge grudge on his shoulder.

Meanwhile, Abrams added that this gave Snoke an opportunity to make Ben an ally of the Dark Side:

It's more than just having a 'bad seed' as a kid. Snoke had targeted this kid and knew that this kid was going to be incredibly powerful in The Force and wanted him as an ally.
So this mother and father had a target as a son, someone who's watching their boy, and these parents aren't there enough to guide him.

Check out the featurette on Kylo's parents below:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens ended with Luke and Rey finally meeting each other on a remote island in the planet Ahch-To. Luke is rumored to have gone into self-exile because of a padawan (believed to be Ben) gone rogue.

Most likely, Episode VIII will explore Kylo's conflict and back story, and how Han and Leia influenced his turning to the Dark Side.

I wonder how Sphero BB-8 will react to that.
