There have been many big-screen adaptations of Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol'. As a fan of one of the best pieces of literary fiction to have ever graced bookshelves, you're really spoilt for choice. But if you happen to be a fan of Robert Zemeckis' 'The Polar Express', as well as actor Jim Carrey, then 'A Christmas Carol (2009)' might be the perfect version for you, as it's helmed by the 'Back to the Future' director, and stars Carrey in motion-capture performance.
'A Christmas Carol (2009)' is easily among the most faithful adaptations too, while Zemeckis, Carrey, and the CG animation enhance the more whimsical nature of Dickens' masterpiece. There does remain some element of criticism about the use and effectiveness of the CG motion-capture in both of Zemeckis' Christmas pictures, but we think it offers an overlay of solid charm that's missing in a lot of seasonal offerings these days.

If you want to watch the frugal old miser Ebenezer Scrooge visited upon by the Three Ghosts of Christmas and learn some harsh but valuable life lessons on his journey through the past, present and future, then this adaptation won't disappoint. Carrey gives an excellent performance as literature's most misunderstood character, while each frame of the film perfectly captures every page of Dickens' most iconic work.
While it is likely to frighten younger viewers, especially with its portrayal of the Ghosts - each of whom is very accurate - what's a good Christmas movie without dark undertones? But the real message here is one that, despite the book being penned by Dickens in 1843, is as scarily relevant as ever. We now find ourselves in an age of abundance, and what better Christmas tale to watch than one that teaches you to acknowledge and appreciate the hardships of others.
In fact, it makes you wonder whether the author himself had a vision of the future!
