Weta Digital has released a new visual effects breakdown video that gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the digital artists' brilliant work on Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

The video reveals that they modeled 1,500 buildings - interiors and exteriors - for the desctruction of Laketown scene, so they could bring realism to Smaug's destruction of the town. Then they created over 1,100 separate CGI flames  that were hand-placed on a shot-for-shot basis. And for the Battle of Lonely Mountain, animators used virtual stage tools to create the epic battle scenes.
