Watch: The Emotional Journey It Took To Write Pixar's Inside Out

Lessons from the Screenplay is this great channel on Youtube that delves deep into the writing process of some of your favorite movies, and his latest video has him delving into the emotional work that went into the making of Pixar’s Inside Out.

I’m going to be honest, though Pixar had released three more movies after Inside Out, this one still manages to be the latest entry that feels like an actual Pixar movie. Though they still had their emotional beats, Finding Dory and Cars 3 didn’t really live up to the same standard, and everyone really didn’t go out to watch The Good Dinosaur.

You have to give director Pete Docter props when it came to making his story. A lot of changes went through the plot and the characters, and it’s weird that we almost got a ‘serious and unhappy’ Joy that’s constantly suggesting violence (true story). The video delves right into the change of goals from Happiness to Sadness—and it’s freaking brilliant.

Right now, the next Pixar movie in line is Coco, and it’s already getting bashed from looking to much like another animated movie that came out earlier—The Book of Life. It’s kind of weird that Disney Animation Studios, which came out with hits like Frozen, Zootopia, and Moana, is now setting the bar of quality when that used to be big brother Pixar’s job. I wonder what else Pixar has in store that isn’t a sequel.

Pixar’s next project, Coco, comes out Nov. 22.
