It's finally here. After months of speculation on the project, Dreamworks has finally given us a first look at their animated adaptation for the hit kids novel, Captain Underpants. The movie boasts an impressive cast of comedy giants like Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, and Thomas Middleditch, and has the same aesthetic as the recently released Peanuts movie.
The story focuses on pranksters George (Hart) and Harold (Middleditch) as they accidentally hypnotize their stuck-up school principal Mr. Krupp (Helms) into becoming delusional "superhero," Captain Underpants. It's all fun and games at first till the boys have to face an actual supervillain by the name of Professor Poopypants (Nick Kroll).
Captain Underpants was a series written by Dav Pilkey that started out in 1997 and spanned 12 novels and 3 spin-offs. It earned a Disney Adventures Kids Choice Award in 2006 and has sold more than 70 million copies worldwide.
Dreamworks actually has a very solid track run with their animated films like How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda, so I have a feeling Captain Underpants is going to be their next big franchise. I also have a lot of faith in the comedic team behind the characters, and I'm sure this movie will end up being fun for the whole family.
Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is set to come out on June 2.
