Warner Bros. Told Matt Reeves The Batman Would Be A Standalone

The Batman might not be a part of Warner Bros. burgeoning DC Extended Universe after all.

Though production hasn't officially started, The Batman director Matt Reeves has been giving fans updates on the highly anticipated superhero movie, revealing that he intended to take a "noir-drive," detective type approach for the film. Now, in a new comment, the director reveals that he was told that The Batman wouldn't be part of DC's "extended universe."

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter's Kim Masters in her podcast The Business, Reeves was asked about his vision for the film he's making for The Dark Knight, and while he echoes his previous comments on his plans to make a Batman movie styled after Alfred Hitchcock's movies, the War For the Planet of the Apes director also indicated that he was led to believe that the film wouldn't be part of the DCEU.

"When they approached me, what they said was look, it's a standalone. This isn't part of the Extended Universe. "

This report comes in right after word broke out that Warner Bros. started development on a Joker origin film, a movie also set outside of the DCEU. Could Reeve's The Batman be included in the studio's Elseworld-type banner?

If proven true, than a new banner outside the DCEU would certainly add to the color of the studio's growing collection of superhero films.

The Batman is in its early stages of development and doesn't have a release date as of yet, though we'll update everyone as soon as we get word.
