Warcraft To One Day Early On Select IMAX 3D, Will Open Early in China

We're only a month away from the theatrical release of Duncan Jones' Warcraft, and it looks like it's going to be one of the biggest blockbusters this summer, but fantasy films are generally a tough sell with audiences despite the success of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, and Warcraft looks like a dungeon master's book brought to life, so who knows how it will do to countries less familiar with Blizzard's franchise.

Despite the box office risk of the epic fantasy film, AMX and IMAX are teaming up to host an early "Fan First Event" screenings for Warcraft on June 8, 2016, the day before the premiere night. Usually, Chinese audiences will get to see the movie earlier than anyone.

Risky or not, Universal and Legendary Pictures are finally starting to treat this film like a proper event. Although official screenings of the film are set to begin on the evening of Thursday, June 9, 2016, AMC and IMAX are teaming up to host early "Fan First Event" screenings on June 8. And naturally, attendance to one of these screenings comes with a few extra goodies and what-not.

Elizabeth Frank, executive vice president and chief content at AMC Theatres said this about the event:

Long-time fans have waited years to see this story on the big screen, and we're ecstatic to provide them with the opportunity to become immersed in the story through The IMAX Experience a day before it's available anywhere else.

Greg Foster, CEO of IMAX Entertainment, returns the favor:

We are excited to work with our friends and partners at AMC in offering our most loyal fans this exclusive early release of Warcraft — a direct bullseye for our core fan-boy audience — in IMAX 3D.

The early IMAX 3D screenings will be offered by twelve AMC theaters, and they are set to begin at 7 P.M. on June 8. You can buy tickets from AMC's website, and each ticket will come with a special event lanyard and a poster. Each screening will be accompanied by behind-the-scenes interviews and footage from the movie's premiere.

Meanwhile, Chinese Audiences will get to see the film earlier than anyone else. Deadline has reported that the film will open in China on June 8. This is definitely not the first time a major movie has opened early overseas, but this move says a lot about the increased importance of the Chinese box office to many studios' plans. Warcraft will open before the Dragon Boat Festival holiday weekend, positioning it to make more profits.
