To some, Star Wars may just be a simple story about the fight between good and evil, but looking closer, the films actually have a lot of depth to them, whether it be by pure aesthetics or themes and story.Films&Stuff on Youtube has come up with this interesting video essay about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and analyzes how masks help tell the story of each of the main characters.
I never really did realize that Finn, Rey, and Kylo Ren all wore masks throughout the entire movie. Just like the video, I think the most interesting character study goes with Kylo Ren, and how the mask on his face also tells the audience where the character’s struggles are in.
I think it’s absolutely brilliant that Kylo actually has both blue and red on his face when he makes his confession to Han Solo, and his face goes all red once he decides to purely embrace the dark side. That’s subtlety you can’t find at first glance.
With the analysis in mind, I wonder how the themes will carry over to The Last Jedi, and I’m very interested to see where Kylo Ren’s character eventually goes. At first I thought he was a tad whiny and irritating, but upon several character studies, I realize that he’s actually one of the most interesting characters in the franchise.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out on Dec. 15.
