Venom Director was 'Bummed' That People Didn't Like the Film

Venom was a box office success for Sony, but it was no mystery that a lot of critics didn't like the film. Director Ruben Fleischer is currently out promoting the release of Zombieland: Double Tap and he reveals that he was kind of ‘bummed' that people didn't love the film too much.

Talking to Fandom, Fleischer was asked what he would change about Venom, and he replied, "If anything, I would have changed the critics' reaction to it. I was really bummed that people didn't like it because it's a crowd-pleasing movie and I'm not sure if there was just blowback against Sony or people just worship Marvel."

Despite the harsh critics, Fleischer was also aware that there is a good chunk of fans for the film as well. He continues, "But I was really surprised that the critics [were gunning for it] because audiences really enjoyed the movie. And so many people who've seen it just appreciated that it was a fun superhero movie. So I was a little surprised. I don't know what they were expecting."

Personally, I didn't like the film, but it definitely is not without its merits. For one, Venom looks amazing, and I love how he's brought to life onscreen. You also have to love the chemistry between symbiote and Brock since they kind of act like a pet and his owner. If you take these and put it in a film with a great story, then we could have a decent Venom film on our hands.

For now, it looks like Fleischer is done with the franchise. Andy Serkis is now taking over for Venom 2, and hopefully, he has a better story to tell this time around.

Venom is set to come out in 2020, but you can catch Zombieland: Double Tap when it hits theaters Oct. 18.
