University Study Says That Red Lightsabers Are Actually The Weakest

Red lightsabers might be associated with powerful offensive abilities of the Dark Side of the Force, but a new University study on the strengths of different lightsaber colors says that they might actually be the weakest.

According to a study conducted by a student in the University of Leicester, calculations show that red lightsabers are actually the weakest type of sabers available in Star Wars' galaxy far, far away. First observing the power that was emitted from Qui-Gon Jinn's (Liam Neeson) green lightsaber in Episode I- The Phantom Menace, the Center for Interdisciplinary Science student Luke Willcox began calculating lightsaber strength, assuming that the weapons produced pure photonic energy.

The student's study concluded that shorter wavelengths would give a saber greater power. Here's the time it would take different colored lighsabers to melt a blast door:

· Red – 14.00 seconds

· Yellow – 12.00 seconds

· Green – 11.00 seconds

· Blue – 9.60 seconds

· Purple – 8.20 seconds

Based on the calculations, it seems like the purple sabers have the most intensity – which comes as a shock considering how menacing the red lightsaber is. The red lightsaber has always been associated with the passion and the aggression of the Sith and other users of the Dark Side of the Force. Guess it's not the strongest saber after all.

Lucasfilm's next movie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, premieres this Friday, December 15, 2017.
