Toy Story 4 might have allowed Woody to live a life of freedom with Bo, but the film actually has an alternate ending that takes the two characters in a much different direction.
According to Entertainment Weekly, one of the bonus features in the upcoming home-entertainment release of Toy Story 4 is an alternate ending that would have changed the entire arc of the Disney Pixar movie. Entertainment Weekly was given an exclusive clip of the alternate ending, and in it, we get to see Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley explaining the alternate ending while some rough animation of the scene plays along.
Instead of having Woody and Bo Peep ending up together, this new ending has Bo deciding to give up her bohemian life after realizing that she could actually do some good for "the kid from the story" a character we presume for Harmony. Woody gives Bo one big hug and says goodbye before returning to his life with Buzz and the others.
It would have been an interesting ending, though it would have thrown out the character development that the film was building towards. Toy Story 4 was meant to address the empty nest syndrome, the feeling of grief and loneliness that parents feel when their children leave home. Bonnie might not have left in Toy Story 4, but her time with Woody was done, and so Woody needed to move on and find purpose outside of ownership.
