Todd McFarlane Hoping To Nab Leonardo DiCaprio For The Spawn Reboot

This year's San Diego Comic Con brought some big news for fans of Todd McFarlane's Spawn. After decades of discussions and rumors about the comicbook writer creating a reboot of the anti-hero's 1997 1997 superhero horror movie, McFarlane announced that his new Spawn movie was finally being signed under Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions.

Now, with a studio backing up McFarlane's Spawn reboot, the comicbook director has begun expressing hopes of nabbing a few big name actors to star in the superhero movie, and one of those includes Leonardo DiCaprio.

Speaking with Vulture earlier this week, the comicbook creator revealed that he had been inspired by the critically-acclaimed Hollywood celebrity's performance in The Wolf of Wallstreet and that when he had been writing the script for Spawn, he was actually thinking of DiCaprio playing one of the lead roles as Twitch, a NYPD detective that tries to track Spawn.

"Given that the big lead was Twitch [an NYPD Detective who comes to track Spawn], when I was writing, I had Leonardo DiCaprio in my head. I don't know if people have seen The Wolf of Wall Street, but there is a manicness in him, he was going up and down, and up and down, and up and down; it was almost dizzying, emotionally, to go with him. And there are parts in this movie where I'm going to need an actor to be able to make those moves. Both in terms of normality, in terms of manic, in terms of anger, and in terms of joy - and be able to go to some extremes in it."

While DiCaprio would certainly add star power to the Spawn reboot, one can't help but wonder whether McFarlane was just taken in by the Academy Award nominee's performance – the comicbook writer's description of "manicness" doesn't seem to fit Twitch at all who comes out as a observant and soft-spoken detective in the comics. Don't worry though. It seems unlikely that DiCaprio would work on Spawn given that the whole movie's budget comes to a measly $10 million.

There's no release date for Spawn just yet but we'll update everyone as soon as we get word.
