TMNT 2: Why Casey Jones Was Almost Cut, Stephen Amell Reveals His Version of the Character

One of the key characters that will be introduced in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is Casey Jones, to be played by Stephen Amell, most popular as Oliver Queen on The CW's Arrow. However, the character almost didn't make the cut and it turns out that the reason was purely practical.

In an interview with Screen Rant, producer Brad Fuller revealed why they didn't include Casey Jones when the original plan was to include him. He said:

There was a point in this story when we didn't have Casey Jones in it because we just felt like we just couldn't fit in another character. That became a big battle towards the end of prep. It was really Bay who called me [and] said, 'Guys, Casey Jones is in this movie. You figure out how to make that story work.' And we had to go back to work on the story in order to fit him in.

It makes sense that Fuller opted to take out Casey considering the myriad of characters already slated for the movie. This was the exact problem that Rob Liefeld pointed out with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Because the DC film was introducing too many characters, there were too many stories to tell and the movie's focus got lost in the process. And while Captain America: Civil War was able to make it work, the franchise and its actors have already been established in previous MCU installments. That said, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is a reboot, so hopefully, Fuller and his team were able to make it work despite the number of characters they have to reintroduce.

It's also probably a good idea that executive producer Michael Bay insisted on including Amell's Casey Jones. Aside from the fact that the character has had a long history with the Turtles in the comics, Amell also has experience kicking ass in Arrow. In addition, the 35-year-old Canadian actor told Screen Rant that his version of Casey will be a new version, saying:

I think what we got to do with this Casey Jones is we got to give him a little bit of an origin story. He's a corrections officer. That explains a lot of why he looks different than a lot of the iterations of Casey Jones that we've seen before. It wasn't just, ‘We want him to look this way.' It was an actual decision based on the fact that he's a corrections officer who wants to be a detective in The New York City Police Department, and so he can't have long, scraggly hair and cutoff sleeves…yet.

With Amell bringing his Arrow skills to the character and with a new look, Casey will undoubtedly be a consistent badass in the movie. From the trailers and promos that we've seen of the movie, it also appears that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows will be fun and entertaining. Well, we'll find out soon enough when the movie hits theaters this Friday, June 3.
