Tim Miller's Departure from Deadpool 2 Went Deep

Over the weekend, it was reported that Deadpool director Tim Miller would not be returning for the sequel, supposedly over creative differences with Ryan Reynolds. A new report from The Wrap says that the issue went deeper than that.

The first report, also from The Wrap, said that Reynold wanted to stick to the humor-based tone of the first film while Miller wanted a more stylized action sequel. Multiple reports over the weekend said that the final straw had to do with the casting of Kyle Chandler as Cable, which Reynolds disagreed with and won the fight with the studio, but the director left.

against Miller were Reynolds andscreenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Those three all saw a sequel that stayed close to the formula of the first, and—probably crucially in the studio execs' heads—stayed relatively inexpensive.

The

latest report

says that it wasn't just about Miller and Reynolds fighting each other over creative differences. Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were also against Miller. According to The Wrap's sources, Miller wanted to make a more "stylized" version that would require three times the first film's $58 million budget. It's no surprise that the studio would back Reynolds, Reese, and Wernick over Miller in this issue. While Miller was asking for money, the three are promising to basically do what made the studio a bunch of money for little investment again. The Wrap says that Miller wanted to "would compete with mega-budget superhero movies".

It's probably best that Miller didn't win this fight. It sounded like he wanted a more traditional summer action film, but trying to fit

Deadpool 2

into that mold would be a huge mistake.
