Thor: Ragnarok-inspired Valkyrie Joins Marvel's Exiles

Marvel has revealed that a Tessa Thompson-inspired Valkyrie will be the fifth member of the new Exiles series coming in April. The character was originally a darkened silhouette when Marvel announced the series, so seeing the follow up this quickly is somewhat surprising. This version of Valkyrie won't be replacing the blonde caucasian fans are familiar with, rather she will be from an alternate Earth like the other members of the team.

Here's what series editor Will Moss had to say about the new incarnation of the character:

"Like everyone else who has seen Taika Waititi's brilliant Thor: Ragnarok movie, all of us on Team Exiles are big fans of Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie. So when we realized that we had the perfect series — where the roster is made up of alternate reality versions of Marvel heroes — to introduce a comic book equivalent of that version of Valkyrie, we jumped at the chance! "

This version of the character has been described as "the lone defender of Asgard" by Exiles writer Saladin Ahmed. He also said that the character would canonically gay, describing her as "maiden wooing," which should make a lot of LGBT fans happy. Admittedly, the original version of Valkyrie is bisexual but more representation is still a good thing.

Frankly, it's nice seeing Marvel comics do something the MCU has yet to do. Tessa Thompson was hoping to portray a bisexual version of the character in Thor: Ragnarok but it was barely noticeable. Having this new version of the character look similarly to Thompson is a nice homage from artist Javier Rodriguez, who will be providing interior art for the series.

As most fans know, this isn't the first time an MCU character inspired changes to the comics. Nick Fury was revealed to have a black son, who eventually took his name - Nick Fury Jr. - and position in S.H.I.E.L.D. Star-Lord listens to music from a cassette player like he does in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Some characters were also given costumes to match their movie counterparts, like Hawkeye, Winter Soldier, and the aforementioned Star-Lord.

The first issue of Exiles comes out on April 11.
