Thor: Love and Thunder is finally going to capitalize on something Ragnarok should have done and give Valkyrie a girlfriend. Is it annoying that characters need love interests so that we know their sexual orientation? Yes but that's just how cinema works since it's a visual medium and we need to see something that makes her a lesbian/bisexual. Fans have been doing their own visual work however, shipping Valkyrie with Captain Marvel since they're both strong women who would be good for each other.
While Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi has seen the number of fans behind Captain Marvel and Valkyrie's ship, he essentially told fans in an interview with WIRED that this ship will not happen in his film. Thankfully, they will still be giving Valkyrie her own queen, we just don't know who it will be yet (please be Sif).
"The thing is, I think it's dangerous for people to say too much about what they want with Marvel, because then they will tend to go the other way. You want to listen to the fans to a point. But also you don't want to have a completely fan-made film because then it doesn't feel like there's any point. You want to have people surprised."
Admittedly, the concept of Captain Marvel and Valkyrie dating is a cute one but it probably wouldn't look too good on the big screen. As Waititi mentions above, it's not always good to listen to fan feedback since it might mess with your creative vision. Here's hoping that Love and Thunder end up doing Valkyrie justice and giving us a good time.
Marvel will release Thor: Love and Thunder on November 5, 2021.
