As those of you who have read Ernie Cline's sci-fi book Ready Player One, you'd know that it's loaded with pop culture references from the '80's including the works of Steven Spielberg. At the recent Los Angeles press event for his upcoming film The BFG, Spielberg discussed the '80's references, and explained that some details will be changed in the film. Although producer Donald DeLine said that the film will be a "classic Spielberg" film, Spielberg said that he won't be including references to his past work, save a few. He says that one of the reasons he decided to direct Ready Player One is because of his love of the '80's.
When Spielberg was was asked how he would prevent the reference-filled film from being a personal "victory lap" of the 1980s, he said:
"I think we were pretty awesome in the 1980s. I love the '80s, and I think one of the reasons I decided to make the movie was that it brought me back to the 1980s and let me do anything I want, except for my own movies. I've cut most of my movies out of Ernie's book, except for the Delorean and a couple of other things that I had something to do with. I've cut a lot of my own references out. I was very happy to see that there was enough without me! The '80s was a great time to grow up."
It sounds like the film will feature a lot of nostalgic fun, and I can't wait to see how Spielberg will put his creative spin to these references, especially the DeLorean.
In Cline's novel, two references ot the DeLorean were found. At one part, it's mentioned that James Donovan Halliday (Mark Rylance),a mysterious, billionaire restored one of the vehicles from the Back To The Future production to drive around. It's possible that we might see Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) ride a virtual version of the car and drive it to an event hosted by Ogden Morrow (Simon Pegg), who is Halliday's former partner and fellow creator of the massive virtual universe called Oasis.
