This Is What It Would Take To Get Karl Urban To Play Judge Dredd Again

Back in May, IM Global Television and Rebellion Productions had both announced their plans to work on a live-action Judge Dredd television series called Judge Dredd: Mega City One.

IM Global Television president Mark Stern (Helix, Defiance, Battlestar Galactica) has decided to work on the project as one of its executive producers along with IM Global Television CEO Stuart Ford and Rebellion owners Jason and Chris Kingsley.

Though the 1995 film adaptation of Judge Dredd didn't turn out so well with Sylvester Stallone playing the lead role, the 2012 Dredd starring Karl Urban has managed to gain a strong cult following, and Rebellion Productions is hoping to land the New Zealand actor for Mega City One.

However, while Urban has said that he'd love to reprise his role as Judge Dredd, the Star Trek star says that he'll only sign in on the project if the show's version of the iconic street judge gets a good story.

Speaking with Screen Rant to promote his upcoming movie, Thor: Ragnarok, the actor managed to talk a little about what it would take for Rebellion and IM Global to successfully bring him back to play Judge Dredd.

"Well, Rebellion, who owns the rights to Judge Dredd, are currently developing a television series called Mega-City One, and I've had many discussions with them about my involvement of which I am interested, and I said to them, ‘Listen, if you write a character that has a function and a purpose and contributes to the overall story, then I might be very interested in reprising that role.' I certainly wouldn't want to step into it and just pay lip service to the movie. There has to be some material there that warrants further exploration of that character. So the ball's in their court."

Urban's demands definitely make sense. What kind of actor would want to sign in on a project that doesn't offer a strong and substantial story to its audience? Urban is an established actor with quite a number of major roles, and the Marvel star wouldn't want to commit to a series unless there's a story to explore.

Mega City One doesn't have a release date just yet, but we'll let everyone know as soon as we get word.
