There Was Just Too Much Comedy In Han Solo For Lucasfilm

Lucasfilm may have already landed Ron Howard for Han Solo however details regarding the studios decision to fire previous directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller's from the highly anticipated project continue to emerge online.

According to a report by Entertainment Weekly, Lucasfilm had problems with Lord and Miller's direction for Han Solo. Though the studio had expected a more "grounded" spinoff film with some "comedic touch," the directorial duo had the impression that they were brought in to add a whole more levity to the galaxy far, far away and the two set off to make a comedy movie out of Han Solo. A source close to the two directors explains:

"They thought they were brought on to make a Phil and Chris movie… Sometimes they just thought the actors could do it differently."

However, it seems like the Lord and Miller may have pushed things too far, taking Han Solo far away from what Lucasfilm had originally envisioned. Not only did they go off script while working in production, they also encouraged the cast to improvise while filming. This ate at the directors' relationship with the studio, and once production came close to an end, Lucasfilm found out that Lord and Miller had a very different vision for some of the film's critical scenes. The two were unwilling to compromise and this resulted in the discharge.

Though it's reassuring that Lucasfilm has already managed to find a new director for Han Solo, it seems like much still has to be done to sort things out. We just hope that the film turns out right when it releases.

Han Solo hits cinemas on May 25, 2018.
