The Thorn of Emberlain: Gentleman Bastard Book 4 Release Date, Kindle News, Dust Jacket, Updates and Everything You Need To Know

The Gentleman Bastard series has been praised as a "fresh, original and engrossing tale" by writers such as George R. R. Martin ever since the release of book 1, The Lies of Locke Lamora, in 2006. Two more books, Red Seas Under Red Skies and The Republic of Thieves followed in 2007 and 2013 respectively. Like the world-acclaimed fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, The Gentleman Bastard will have seven books in total, but the big lapse between book 3.

The highly anticipated The Thorn of Emberlain caused worries that the book was turning into a Winds of Winter or Doors of Stone – with a Reddit user characterizing authors Scott Lynch, George R. R. Martin and Patrick Rothfuss as "the Trifecta of Patience." Things are looking up for Scott Lynch fans, however, as The Thorn of Emberlain finally got a 2021 release date. Here's all you need to know:

The Thorn of Emberlain Release Date

According to Goodreads, the expected release date for The Thorn of Emberlain is the 12th of October 2021. Of course, the book's release has been shrouded with confusion for some time, ever since author Scott Lynch revealed that he had completed his draft in 2019. Many fans had the opportunity to pre-order from Amazon with a promised September 2020 release date.

Unfortunately, fans were then disappointed, as their orders were canceled and the release date got delayed. The Thorn of Emberlain entry can still be found on Amazon but the pre-order function is currently unavailable. According to Reddit users, Amazon was perhaps being optimistic and such mistakes can happen with long-awaited items.

Naturally, some people will take the new release date with a grain of salt, especially since the dates provided by Goodreads are often subject to change. Lynch, hasn't been very vocal about The Thorn of Emberlain since revealing the completion of his draft, so it might be safe to look at his social media and newsletter for definite updates. At least, knowing that – unlike the ever-delayed Winds of WinterThe Thorn of Emberlain at least has a finished draft and an Amazon entry with a cover, is better than nothing.

The hardcover and paperback versions of The Thorn of Emberlain are currently available to view (but not pre-order or otherwise interact with) on Amazon. This is not true for the Kindle version. The previous three books of the series can be found on Kindle for a much lower price compared to the hardbacks. And if you're still unsure, you can order a preview of around 20 pages of the first book to find out more about Locke Lamora.

With a rating of 4.20/5, The Republic of Thieves was very well-received by fans. There has been a lot of speculation about The Thorn of Emberlain regarding several plot points, such as the prophecy that the main character Locke Lamora will lose a key, a crown, and a child.

What we know for sure, is that The Thorn of Emberlain will mark a new chapter in Locke's life – and one he's not entirely comfortable with. Here's a short synopsis:

"Locke Lamora, thief, con-man, pirate, political deceiver is back, and now he must become a soldier.

A new chapter for Locke and Jean and finally the war that has been brewing in the Kingdom of the Marrows flares up and threatens to capture all in its flames.

And all the while Locke must try to deal with the disturbing rumours about his past revealed in The Republic of Thieves. Fighting a war when you don't know the truth of right and wrong is one thing. Fighting a war when you don't know the truth of yourself is quite another. Particularly when you've never been that good with a sword anyway..."

We can only hope that the release date will provide some answers regarding Locke's identity and any other loose threads. Stay tuned for more information, as the release date approaches. In the meantime, you might want to check out other 2021 SFF releases such as Project Hail Mary and A Court of Silver Flames.
