The upcoming Spawn reboot has captured the interest of fans everywhere, even though it has no trailer. Anyone who grew up in the 90's will have seen the character's comics everywhere, so hearing about his return to the big screen is intriguing, to say the least. However, fans who were hoping to see the character's origin recap will be disappointed since creator Todd McFarlane feels that it isn't important to the story they're telling.
When asked by Yahoo News if the film would detail the character's origin, he had this to say:
"No. I always come back to Jaws — not that I have a shark in Spawn! But that shark was enormous. And at anytime in the movie, did they tell me why the shark was so damn big? No! Did it matter to me? No! All that mattered was that it was big and in the same vicinity as humans. Or John Carpenter‘s The Thing: where do the aliens come from? I don't know! What was its reason for taking over bodies? I don't know! It just was. I'm OK without an origin. Just give me a compelling story, scare the s*** out off me from time to time, and I'm along for the ride."
McFarlane does like to bring up Jaws a lot when discussing the Spawn reboot. To be fair, he did say that the film would be more horror-oriented and Jaws is a pretty scary flick. He previously stated that the character wouldn't be the main focus of the film and would be used like a movie monster.
Aside from the fact that the origin wouldn't be focused on, the film's story will mostly be original as well. The characters will be from the comics, but the story surrounding them will be new, which has always been the case with comic book adaptations. Captain America: Civil War might be based on the comic, but it tells the story in a very different manner.
No release date for the Spawn film has been released. Production will start in February 2018.
